The UT System Board of Regents has approved $25 million toward the construction of the Center for Structural Engineering Research. The proposed center will contain 40,000 square feet of conference, classroom, office and shop areas, and 40,000 square feet of research space.

Engineer earns service award
The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying this month presented its Distinguished Service Award to Nabi R. Fakroddin, PE, SE, FASCE, for his dedicated service to the engineering profession.
Fakroddin, of St. Charles, was a member of the Illinois Structural Engineering Board from 1982 to 1996, serving as vice chair for four years. He was named an emeritus member of the Illinois Structural Engineering Board in 1997.

Hospital's deadline extended for quake standards
Palomar Medical Center's 2013 deadline to meet the state's earthquake-safety standards has been extended to 2030.
Since December, the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development has been allowing acute-care hospitals to apply for seismic collapse-risk re-evaluations using the latest assessment technology.
The downtown Escondido hospital, operated by the Palomar Pomerado Health district, applied for reassessment in June and received the extension this month.
