Engineering organization deemed ‘outstanding’

The University’s chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers was named an outstanding student chapter for 2008 by the nationwide organization. “Every year our student chapters committee awards recognition to a handful of student chapters based on their level of participation,” explained Gordon Ellis, head of student awards at AIChE, an organization that aims to advance the practice and theory of chemical engineering. Recognition is based on “the percentage of chemical engineering students who are members of the chapter.”

Engineers Say Gulf Coast Better Prepared for Gustav

Hurricane Gustav packed quite a punch on the Gulf of Mexico, but it could have been much worse. Many worried we'd see a repeat of Hurricane Katrina, which slammed into the Gulf three years ago. They have been keeping a close eye on Gustav and new developing storms.

The Truly Interdisciplinary Search

Most faculty hiring is done department by department — a method that many scholars say contributes to the difficulties for those whose teaching and research can’t be neatly placed in one departmental box. Professors have complained for years that to do interdisciplinary work, they need to get hired by one discipline (playing down out-of-field interests), and then post-hire or post-tenure, they can branch out.

UND professor says recoverable oil in Bakken could more than double after study

A UND professor says the amount of recoverable oil on the U.S. side of the Bakken Formation could more than double as a result of a three-year study by UND researchers looking at how to increase the amount of oil that can be extracted from the Bakken’s dense shale. A report released by the U.S. Geological Survey in April estimated that the Bakken Formation holds 3 billion to 4.3 billion barrels of oil that can be recovered in North Dakota and Montana using current technology.

Hazards of Genetic Engineering

Genetic engineering (GE) is currently the largest human and ecological experiment in history. GE enables scientists to manipulate the genes of all living things in ways that never occur in nature. The new bio-technologies that manipulate the genes of micro-organisms including bacteria and viruses, seeds, fish, animals and humans are dogged by controversy and uncertainties. We do not have clear answers to many questions.
