Pathologists 'overworked,' need better guidelines

New Brunswick pathologists are struggling to deliver high-quality work, but they're stressed by a workload that leaves little time for anything else, says Dr. Anne O'Brien, a Saint John Regional Hospital pathologist and president of the province's pathology association.

She offered solutions to the Creaghan inquiry Wednesday about fixing problems in the health-care system. The inquiry is looking into the work of Dr. Rajgopal Menon, who last worked in Miramichi.

Small labs 'unsustainable,' inquiry hears

A leading pathologist in the Maritimes expressed concerns Monday about the quality of small hospital laboratories, telling a public inquiry they need a stronger support system.

"My personal view is that the solo pathologistst and perhaps the two-party pathology lab in a small community are unsustainable," Dr. Godfrey Heathcote, chief of pathology and laboratory medicine at the Capital Health Centre in Halifax, testified.
