Engineering organization deemed ‘outstanding’

The University’s chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers was named an outstanding student chapter for 2008 by the nationwide organization. “Every year our student chapters committee awards recognition to a handful of student chapters based on their level of participation,” explained Gordon Ellis, head of student awards at AIChE, an organization that aims to advance the practice and theory of chemical engineering. Recognition is based on “the percentage of chemical engineering students who are members of the chapter.”

Quantum Insights Could Lead To Better Detectors

MIT Professor of Mechanical Engineering Seth Lloyd has found that a peculiar quantum-physics property called entanglement can be harnessed to make detectors--similar in principle to radar systems used to track airplanes in flight or ships at sea--that are as much as a million times more efficient than existing systems. In addition, beams of entangled light could be swept across a scene to reconstruct a detailed image, with a similar improvement in efficiency.

Engineer’s vision to turn tide for the big river

A SIMPLE quotation attached to the noticeboard in Tony Trapp’s office in Broomhaugh House, the grand former home of the famous Swan family, neatly characterises his own remarkable story. “Persistence is omnipotent,” former US President Calvin Coolidge once said, and Dr Trapp’s success is certainly testimony to that. And you could add determination, bravery, ingenuity and entrepreneurship for good measure.
