UNM wins biomolecular imaging grant to build optical scanning nanoscope

"We're building from scratch an instrument for the UNM Cancer Research and Treatment Center that will make an optical image with a resolution of better than one nanometer," said UNM Physics Professor Jean-Claude Diels, the lead investigator in the program who won the Optical Society of America's Engineering Excellence Award in 2006. "This is considerably less than the wavelength of light, which is generally considered to be the resolution limit for imaging."

McDonald Optical to open new location

In hopes of keeping customers and expanding business on the west side of the river, McDonald Optical will open a new location in the Coral North development. The new location will be just north of Interstate 80 at the Coral Ridge Avenue exit in the same shopping center as Buffalo Wild Wings, Texas Roadhouse, Golf USA and Bed, Bath & Beyond. Don McDonald, company vice president who oversaw the University Hospitals' location, said the hospital optical care location closed Memorial Day weekend.

New World Record for Wireless Optical Transmission

Italian and Japanese scientists have demonstrated a laser based wireless communications system which has achieved a record transmission of 1.28 Terabit/s (or 1280 Gigabit/s) in a free air link between two transceivers installed on the roof of the CEIIC building and on the roof of the Building A at the Italian National Research Council around 210 meters away.
