Linux, Windows 7 and Netbooks: It's On

With the rise of new, ultra-small netbook computers, Linux has a chance to make its case to consumers. Windows Vista usually won't fit on netbooks, XP already has one foot in the grave, and many netbook buyers may give Linux serious consideration when choosing what OS they want pre-installed. Microsoft says Windows 7 will target netbooks, but until that OS is released, the ball's in Linux's court.

Microsoft showed off new Windows 7 innovations at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference this week. The focus was how the upcoming version of Microsoft's flagship product will make it easier for hardware partners to create new experiences for Windows PC customers.

Windows senior vice presidents Steven Sinofsky and Jon DeVaan rallied hardware partners, encouraging them to begin testing their current products and building new products on the application programming interface (API).

Apple reportedly developing software fix for 3G iPhone network connection problems

BusinessWeek reports that while Apple has refused to publicly acknowledge that the new iPhone has any network connections problems, the company is actually working on a software fix that should be ready by the end of September at the latest.

Apparently the problem involves an Infineon-made chip inside the iPhone that Apple has improperly configured.

Ruling Bolsters Open-Source Software

A federal appeals court Wednesday overturned a lower court's decision in a copyright case that could strengthen the legal foundation of certain software such as Linux and online services such as Wikipedia.

The court ruled that conditions of an agreement called the Artistic License were enforceable under copyright law, supporting a basic tenet behind open-source software and other creations that the general public is allowed to freely modify and distribute.
