The spawning of online communities and social networks has significantly changed the way businesses market to consumers. In the past, marketing initiatives were pushed on consumers. These days the information is being shared and discussed. Consumers now use blogs, wikis, social networks and other tools to communicate and connect with one and other and to share ideas, knowledge and feedback about your brand and it’s important for you to listen and participate.
While the Internet has given consumers a tremendous advantage in terms of controlling the marketing messages they receive, the web doesn’t respect individuals. What works for consumers will also work for marketers. As many forward thinking entrepreneurs have found, one can create a new business and/or deploy a new marketing strategy utilizing social networking tools and platforms. You, too, can use blogs, social networks, and other forms of new media to listen, respond to, and engage consumers. There is huge upside from extending the reach of your brand, increasing search engine traffic, separating yourself from the competition and relationship marketing just to name a few.
In my next post we’ll discuss the prons and cons of implementing online tools like blogs and social networks into the marketing mix in greater detail.
