High school students seeking an aerospace career can now reach for the stars at the new Central Florida Aerospace Academy.
All Polk County high school students may apply and, if selected, complete their high school degree through the academy's program.
Located at Sun 'n Fun in Lakeland, the academy resulted from a collaboration among Gulf Coast Avionics, Kathleen High School, Polk Community College, Traviss Career Center and the University of South Florida Polytechnic.
"The goal is to provide highly qualified individuals to work in the aerospace industry," Frank Young, an aerospace engineer and director of the USF Polytechnic's engineering division, said in a news release. "Students will see and work with avionics and aviation equipment used by professionals."
Students will be challenged to reach high levels of achievement in science, technology, engineering and mathematics in preparation for high-tech careers in the fields of aviation and aerospace.
