Execs use social networking to climb career ladder

Senior executives are increasingly using social networking sites to climb the career ladder, according to a report from recruitment firm Harvey Nash.

A survey of 500 senior executives shows professional social networking sites are set to rival executive job boards as a way of finding new career opportunities.

Some 90% of respondents said they were registered on sites such as LinkedIn, compared with just 50% posting their CV on a job board.

Most executives see "building a personal brand" as important to their career and more than two-thirds (68%) say social and professional networking sites are an important part of this.

Carol Rosati, director at Harvey Nash, said, "We are starting to see a shift in the way senior executives develop their careers.

I'd have to say it's a great way to network with companies especially as someone looking for a job, to contact them through a social network site lets them see a little more about you so that if you do go in for an interview they have an idea of what to expect and the fact that your there means they are probably already interested in hiring you. Forget sending resumes send companies to your linkedin profile and see how much more they appreciate it. My friend was hired by a PEO after he left one job and contacted just a few companies on some sites instead of going through a typical job search site.
