Maryland's nursing vacancy rate was higher than the national average last year, despite a statewide effort to increase faculty positions and students in the field.
A recent survey from the Maryland Hospital Association found the state had a 10 percent nursing vacancy rate, compared with an 8 percent vacancy rate nationally.
The state is short about 2,600 full-time nurses, according to the survey. If this continues, Maryland will have a shortfall of 10,000 nurses by 2016.
